  • It Would Be A Crime To Miss Out
    <p>JUNE is National Crime Writing Month and Tameside libraries have hatched a great plot for all lovers of detective novels.   • An Invitation To Armed Forces Day
    <p>DID you serve in the armed forces? Or did a member of your family, a friend, or a neighbour? If so, Tameside Council wants to know.</p> <p>On Saturday, June 29, the borough will again be celebrating Armed Forces Day in Victoria Park, Denton, and it wants to hear from ex-service personnel who would like to take part.</p> <p>The event begins with a short service of remembrance at Denton War Memorial at 11am, which will immediately be followed by a reception for veterans. Between 1 and 4pm there will be entertainment in the park including music and stalls.</p> <p>Cllr Gerald Cooney, executive member for learning and achievment, said: &ldquo;I believe it&rsquo;s very important that we offer public recognition to our veterans, and I would like to send a personal invitation to as many of them as possible.</p> <p>&ldquo;If you would like to come, or you know someone who would, please let us have the details.   • Ashton Ready To Welcome Regiment's Return
    <p>ATTENTION! The 1st Battalion Duke of Lancaster&rsquo;s Regiment will be celebrating its return from a six-month tour of Afghanistan with a homecoming parade through Ashton-under-Lyne on Wednesday, May 22.</p> <p>Troops, accompanied by the Band of the King&rsquo;s Division, will leave the parish church (St Michael and All Angels), Stamford Street, at noon and parade to the town hall where they will be reviewed by the colonel-in-chief of the regiment, Brigadier Mike Griffiths, and Cllr Joe Kitchen, who will be performing his first duty as the newly-installed Civic Mayor of Tameside.</p> <p>Cllr Kieran Quinn, executive leader of Tameside Council, said: &ldquo;Tameside is very proud of its military heritage and always keen to support for the armed forces. I&rsquo;m sure the streets will be packed with people wishing to welcome the Duke of Lancaster&rsquo;s Regiment home from a tough tour of Afghanistan.&rdquo;</p> <p>Col (Retd) Chris Owen, regimental secretary of the Duke of Lancaster&#39;s Regiment, said: &ldquo;We&rsquo;re extremely proud to have the soldiers of the 1st battalion back from service in Afghanistan and delighted we can mark that return in Ashton-under-Lyne.</p> <p>&ldquo;The people of the town, Tameside and Greater Manchester as a whole are hugely important to the regiment. Many of our soldiers have homes here. This parade is our way of saying thank you for all the support we receive.&rdquo;</p> <p>Tameside has long links with the army. The Lancasters are descended from the Manchester Regiment which had its depot at the town&rsquo;s Ladysmith Barracks for more than 100 years up to 1958. They merged with the King&rsquo;s Liverpools to form the King&rsquo;s Regiment which, in 2006, became part of the newly-formed Duke of Lancaster&rsquo;s Regiment.</p> <p>In 1950, the old Ashton Council asked the 9th Battalion Manchester Regiment to attend all ceremonial occasions in the town with drums beating, bayonets fixed and colours flying. The King&rsquo;s Regiment was given the freedom of Tameside in 1994, and the honour was bestowed on the Duke of Lancaster&rsquo;s in 2007.</p> <p>Tameside is also home to the Museum of the Manchester Regiment, which was opened by Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother in 1987. Many of the regiment&rsquo;s colours are laid up in Ashton Parish Church.</p> <p>*On Monday, June 10, Tameside Council will confer the Freedom of the Borough on the Mercian Regiment. After a parade through Stalybridge starting at 11am, the Mercians will move on to Dukinfield for a ceremony at the town hall at around 12.15pm.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>
  • Ashton Market Square £4.5 Million Makeover – Tell Us What You Think
    <p>ASHTON&rsquo;s much-loved Market Square is set for a &pound;4.5 million make-over, and residents, town centre businesses and visitors are being encouraged to share their views on the plan.</p> <p>&nbsp;The community consultation will take place in stages throughout 2013 with the aim of developing a detailed plan by the end of the year, with the work starting in early 2014.</p> <p>&nbsp;There are no fixed plans for what shape the makeover will make, hence the need for as many people as possible to take part in the consultation.</p> <p>&nbsp;The Council recently appointed global architecture, planning, engineering and technology firm, IBI Group, to develop proposals for the Market Square.</p> <p>&nbsp;Tameside Council Executive Leader Cllr Kieran Quinn, said: &ldquo;Ashton Market Square is rich in history and holds a special place in the hearts of the public and traders alike.&nbsp; Throughout this process, we will be looking to improve the area for the future while ensuring we retain its charm and appeal.   • Whit Friday Countdown Starts
    <p>IT&rsquo;S Whit Friday on May 24, and once again Tameside will be hosting the ever-popular brass band contests which are often billed as the greatest free show on earth.<br /> <br /> The tradition dates back to the late 19th century, and this year the borough is hosting 11 events, all organised by volunteer committees under the aegis of the Tameside Friends of Whit Friday.<br /> <br /> To have a chance of being crowned champions, bands have to perform at six of the contests.   • Market Art Competition
    <p>BUDDING artists are being encouraged to share their own unique views of Ashton Market as part Tameside&rsquo;s Love Your Local Market celebrations.</p> <p>The &lsquo;Through your eyes&rsquo; competition, open to people of all ages, is looking for drawings, paintings or photographs which in some way reflect the market and or its visitors.   • Local Mmr Vaccination Plans To Be Developed In Response To National Increase In Measles Cases
    <p><strong>Joint Tameside Council and Tameside and Glossop Clinical Commissioning Group Press Release</strong></p> <p><strong>Local MMR vaccination plans to be developed in response to national increase in measles cases.</strong></p> <p>Due to concern at national level over the increase in measles cases a new national catch-up programme to improve MMR uptake for those most at risk of catching measles will be rolled out across the country. Tameside Metropolitan Bough Council and Tameside and Glossop Clinical Commissioning Group will be working closely with Greater Manchester Public Health England (PHE) to develop our local catch-up campaign.</p> <p>Measles is highly infectious an can be a very unpleasant illness which starts with a few days of cold like symptoms and is then followed by a rash with high fever, red eyes and a cough.&nbsp; It can be particularly severe in young babies under the age of one year, teenagers and older people, especially those with a weakened immune system.</p> <p>Nationally measles is at its highest level for 18 years and experts believe this can be attributed to the number of 10-16 year olds who are unvaccinated or only partially vaccinated.&nbsp; Doses are normally given at 13 months of age and between the ages of 3 and 4 years. However, children of any age can be vaccinated if they missed out on their vaccination when they were younger.</p> <p>Angela Hardman, Director of Public Health at Tameside Council, said: &quot;We are asking the parents of young children, teenagers and young adults who may have missed the MMR vaccine to remember it&rsquo;s never too late to get vaccinated against measles<u> </u>by contacting their GP. &nbsp;It is important that we have an excellent uptake of MMR so the opportunity for measles to spread is prevented<u>. </u>We know that there are local children and young adults who are unvaccinated or have missed one dose. It is important for their own health and that of others in our community that they become fully protected against measles.&rdquo;</p> <p>These sentiments were echoed by Dr Alan Dow, local GP and Chair of Tameside CCG, who said:&ldquo;Measles can lead to serious complications including blindness and death.Around one in ten children who get measles is admitted to hospital and it can be very serious in pregnant women.   • Mercian Regiment To Receive Freedom Of Tameside
    <p>TAMESIDE Council is to confer the Freedom of the Borough on the Mercian Regiment, which has responded by agreeing to take part in two homecoming parades on Monday, June 10.</p> <p>The Mercians are linked to Tameside through the old Cheshire Regiment which recruited in Dukinfield, Hyde, Longdendale and Stalybridge. Its battle honours include Mons (1914), the Somme (1916) and El Alamein (1942). In 2007, the Cheshires merged with the Staffordshire Regiment and the Worcester and Sherwood Foresters to form the Mercian Regiment.</p> <p>Tameside Council rarely confers the Freedom of the Borough and the Mercians will be only the 11th recipients in the authority&rsquo;s 39-year history. The honour will be formally announced at the full council meeting on Tuesday, May 21. However, it will be ceremonially conferred on June 10.</p> <p>The Mercians will begin the day by parading through the streets of Stalybridge from 11am. The salute will be taken outside the Civic Hall, Trinity Street.</p> <p>After a short break they will move on to Dukinfield. Just after noon, at the town hall, King Street, the Colonel of the Mercian Regiment, Brigadier Andrew Sharpe, will be presented with an illuminated scroll by the new Civic Mayor of Tameside, Cllr Joe Kitchen. Brigadier Sharpe will also be invited to sign the roll of honorary freemen.</p> <p>Cllr Kieran Quinn, executive leader of Tameside Council, said: &ldquo;Many hundreds of men from this borough served with the Cheshires during the two world wars and other conflicts, so it is only right that we commemorate that bond by conferring the Freedom of the Borough on their successors, the Mercian Regiment.</p> <p>&ldquo;The Mercians have upheld the Cheshires&rsquo; fine traditions with their service and sacrifice in Afghanistan where two soldiers with Tameside connections lost their lives: Lance Cpl Andrew Breeze, who attended Audenshaw School, and Cpl Harvey Holmes from Hyde.&rdquo;</p> <p>The two Mercian Regiment&nbsp;marches are in addition and separate to the Duke of&nbsp; Lancaster&#39;s Regiment&#39;s hmecoming parade through Ashton town centre on Wednesday, May 22.</p>
  • Faith School Travel Passes Under Review
    <p>IN a move designed to make sure all secondary school pupils are treated equally, youngsters attending faith schools outside Tameside may have their exclusive right to free travel withdrawn.</p> <p>The proposed change, which is up for consultation under the Big Conversation, is all about fairness.&nbsp; At the moment, the only youngsters who get free travel passes irrespective of income, or whether there is a school nearer to their home, are those who go to faith schools.</p> <p>Tameside is the last authority in Greater Manchester to review this policy which was established in the 1980s. &nbsp;If the changes are agreed, they will be implemented so as to minimise their impact, especially on families with more than one child at a faith school.</p> <p>Around 350 pupils would be affected, the majority of whom attend the Blue Coat Church of England School in Oldham.</p> <p>However, free passes would remain for those pupils from low-income families, those who have special educational needs, or who live more than three miles from their nearest school.</p> <p>Executive Member for Learning and Achievement, Cllr Gerald Cooney, said: &ldquo;We are the last Greater Manchester authority to consider making this change.&nbsp; Unfortunately, the Council is always at risk of legal challenge and so we have to review everything we do.</p> <p>&ldquo;That&rsquo;s why it is important that as many people as possible make their views known through our Big Conversation so we can find the best way to minimise any impact.&rdquo;</p> <p>The consultation runs until Friday, 17 May.     <p>FREE market pitches are being offered to new traders as part of a package of special events and offers to celebrate Tameside markets.</p> <p>Love Your Local Market (LYLM) fortnight, which runs from 15 May, aims to showcase all that markets have to offer as well as give new small businesses a helping hand in starting up trade.</p> <p>As part of the campaign, Tameside Council has teamed up with the National Market Traders Federation (NMTF) to offer free market pitches &nbsp;to encourage aspiring entrepreneurs.</p> <p>Budding small businesses can apply for one of 20 pitches &ndash; which will be free throughout the event and then discounted for nine months &ndash; on Ashton and Hyde markets. They will also be given one-to-one support from the NMTF to help them establish long-term success. Photographers/reporters are invited to attend.</p> <p>---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------</p> <p>Six year 5 pupils from Moorside Primary school, Droylsden, are practising their Chinese and will soon be putting it into practice in Nanjing !</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>The pupils, Olivia Bambroffe, Michael Brennan, Faye Gurney, James Houghton, Hannah Johnson and Aaron Pridding are heading to Nanjing, which is the capital of Jiangsu province in Eastern China and has a prominent place in Chinese history and culture.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>Travelling with the pupils are teachers, Ian Wilson, Fayaz Malik and Jessica Ashton along with parent volunteer, Tameside Council Head of Environmental Services, Mike Gurney.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>Links were forged with primary schools in Nanjing after Moorside&rsquo;s Headteacher, Pierre Coiffait and Deputy Headteacher, Ian Wilson attended an International Co-operative in China, last October, to promote the speaking of Chinese</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>Early in 2013, the co-operative in China offered the school the chance to visit the area again. Pupils who showed an interest in going on the trip, went through a rigorous assessment and the six pupils selected will be spending a week visiting various schools. They&rsquo;ll even try their hand at teaching in some of the classes !</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>Mike said: &ldquo;This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for these youngsters. This will raise their global awareness and they will see some amazing sights and sounds, whilst at the same time sampling the culture and lifestyle of Nanjing.&rdquo;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>Pupil Michael Brennan, aged 10, said: &ldquo;I cannot wait to see what life is like inside a Chinese school ! &rdquo;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>Mike added: &ldquo;Upon their return to Tameside, the learning possibilities will continue with all the children being expected to teach their classmates issues based on their Chinese experiences.     <p>This year&rsquo;s Foster Carers fortnight focuses on the growing need to recruit more carers for teenagers.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>People who think they could offer a teenager a stable, family home can find out more at a series of events during Foster Carer Fortnight (13 &ndash; 27 May).</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>The skills needed to foster teenagers include patience and resilience to help a young person through the most crucial years of their lives. Foster carers receive intensive support, access to training and a generous allowance.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>Councillor Allison Gwynne, Executive Member for Children and Families said: &ldquo;There&rsquo;s no doubt that being a parent to a teenager is one of the hardest things you can do, but we will provide the support and training that foster carers need. If you&rsquo;re enthusiastic and have the skills and aptitude to parent teenagers through to adulthood we&rsquo;d love to hear from you.&rdquo;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>There is a national shortage of at least 10,000 foster carers in the UK with a particular need for carers for teenagers. The Fostering Service is looking particularly for applications from black and ethnic minority carers, single male carers and young couples as these groups are currently under-represented nationally and locally.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>John* has been a single, male carer for Tameside Fostering service for the past 23 years. He said: &ldquo;I had a young teenager who worked in my joinery shop on Saturdays. I took him on full time and gave him the flat above the shop when he was 17 years old as he had left being in care. Over the years he worked for me and I learnt how to understand young men and get them to open up and tell me things when they were ready.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>&ldquo; I get a lot out of fostering, seeing the young people blossom and develop their self-confidence. The biggest satisfaction I get is from seeing them smile and achieving. They keep me young at heart due to their humour. Young people need someone to give them a chance.   • Pet Project Comes To Life
    <p>THE much loved aviary at Stamford Park has been brought back to life to provide state-of-the-art accommodation for a variety of pets.</p> <p>The feature has been rebuilt and updated to modern and safe standards as part of the historic park&rsquo;s multi-million pound restoration project, funded through Heritage Lottery Fund and the Big Lottery Fund&rsquo;s jointly funded Parks for People Programme.</p> <p>Welfare has been a key priority in the design of the enclosures, which use a range of materials and objects to stimulate the animals and encourage them to follow their natural habits.</p> <p>The aviary &ndash; which has been inspected by the RSPCA - includes chickens, a cockerel, finches, canaries and budgerigars as well as rabbits which have come from a local animal rescue centre. It is open every day from 9am to 4pm.</p> <p>Its opening completes the renovation of the flagship park, which has also included the new Highfield Pavilion &ndash; with its caf&eacute; and toilets &ndash; and new water features.</p> <p>The project also included repair and conservation work to the park&rsquo;s key historic buildings &ndash; including the boathouse, kiosk, gardener&rsquo;s lodge - as well as its monuments and memorials. There were also upgrades to the crazy golf facility and The Dingle as well as to landscaping and drainage.</p> <p>Tameside Council Executive Member for Communities Cllr Kevin Welsh said: &ldquo;We know the aviary has long been a favourite feature in the park and I&rsquo;m sure I&rsquo;m not the only person who is delighted to see it back open &ndash; especially in its high welfare and secure new building where the animals can be looked after to the highest standards. It is particularly pleasing that we have been able to work closely with local animal charities and the RSPCA to achieve this.</p> <p>&ldquo;I would urge people to come along to meet our new pets and see for themselves how this and other much loved features in the park have been restored.&rdquo;</p> <p>A number of special events and activities are planned for this year to celebrate the park&rsquo;s 140<sup>th</sup> anniversary.   • Walking In A Tameside Wonderland
    <p>GET ready to start walking in a Tameside wonderland. For the weekend of May 10 and 11, the council&rsquo;s arts and events team has organised two great events with a Lewis Carroll theme as part of its Stage and Screen project.</p> <p>&nbsp;It all begins with Ballet Theatre UK&rsquo;s stunning production of &ldquo;Alice in Wonderland&rdquo; at the George Lawton Hall, Mossley, on Friday, May 10. Tickets are still available priced &pound;16 and &pound;12.</p> <p>&nbsp;Then on Saturday, May 11, the fun moves to Stamford Park, Stalybridge, for a Mad Hatter&rsquo;s Tea Party (12.30 to 4.30pm).</p> <p>&nbsp;There will be two family theatre productions - &ldquo;Alice in Wonderland&rdquo; and &ldquo;Alice through the Looking Glass&rdquo; - as well as face-painting, craft activities, storytelling, garden games and the opportunity for children to be photographed with their favourite characters. Children, and indeed adults, are encouraged to wear fancy dress.</p> <p>&nbsp;Cllr John Sullivan, Tameside Council&rsquo;s assistant executive member for music, culture and the performing arts, said: &ldquo;Children have loved Alice and characters like the White Rabbit and the March Hare since Lewis Carroll wrote his books 150 years ago.</p> <p>&nbsp;&ldquo;I&rsquo;m sure children and families will enjoy all the events.
